It originally planned to convert a number of canals to railways, but was leased by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) from 1847 and only built one railway in its own right. WebThe last working boats reached Shrewsbury in 1936 and, Longdon-upon-Tern in 1939. In 1944, along with many other of the Shropshire Union’s canals, the canal route from Norbury Junction to Shrewsbury was officially abandoned. Following abandonment the canal passed from railway ownership into the ownership of the nationalised British Waterways.
